The Danish Sportfishing Association welcomes the measures taken by its government to improve biodiversity on the Danish coast

EAA member Danmarks Sportsfiskerforbund welcomes the decision taken by the Danish government to fund 5 projects aiming to restore or re-establish old rocky reefs that have been deteriorated by past rock fishing. These rocks are indeed an essential habitat for fish such as eel and cod whose populations are already under pressure.

“For a long time, the government biodiversity restoration plans have focused on enhancing terrestrial biodiversity by letting grass grow and protecting forest areas. Now, eyes need to be opened to the low biodiversity under the sea surface, which we anglers encounter through our hobby.” explained Erik Haar Nielsen, project manager at Danmarks Sportsfiskerforbund

The Danish Sportfishing Association is carrying out similar initiatives by bringing together financial support from VELUX FONDEN and several organisations to set up the Coastal Helper project. This project investigates how to improve the marine environment with the help of volunteers who work on the restoration of small rocky reefs, making new biogenic reefs and plant eelgrass.
